In 2023, our team created a specialized learning program for children and named it Be Kind. The program was designed to enhance the health and welfare of dogs and other animals in and around Cotacachi, Ecuador. Beyond that, it aimed to instill humane values and essential skills among students, teachers, and communities. By promoting responsible behavior and safe play around dogs, it sought to reduce the risk of bites and other unwelcome interactions that could lead to health concerns, including potential rabies exposure and infection.
The program was so successful, reaching over 850 children and teachers in its pilot phase, that we decided to increase our goal in 2024 and triple the number of children who received our Be Kind program.
After working with four schools during the first semester of the year, and reaching over 1500 students, our team responded to requests to reach multiple classes at once through a novelty program: a well-scripted and relatable puppet show.
We set out to plan a vaccination drive and incorporate an engaging puppet show specifically designed for younger children. Through local characters and relatable scenarios, the hope is to convey essential information about rabies prevention, emphasizing the role of vaccinations and responsible pet ownership.
The big picture is that the program raises awareness about the needs, rights, and well-being of animals. It educates community members about proper care, nutrition, and the prevention of cruelty. Learning about animals’ emotions, needs, and vulnerabilities fosters compassion and empathy. These qualities extend beyond animals and positively impact interactions with fellow humans.
