The street dogs in Cotacachi have an ally. After Amici Cannis effectively stepped in to put an end to the cruel culling of street dogs by local authorities, the organization initiated a program that would provide street animals with the preventive care they needed, such as spay/neuter, vaccinations, and deworming, cover any additional costs such as feed, and ensure they received proper access to emergency veterinary care.
Thanks to our spay/neuter program, we have seen the street dog population decline from around 500 to about 200 in the last 10 years. This means fewer dogs suffering from hunger, disease, and abuse in the streets. Some of the dogs have found loving homes with local families, while others have become part of the community, receiving food and shelter from local shops and restaurants.
Our program is set up to help the community embrace the dogs they coexist with. When there is an emergency, caretakers know to call us and our team promptly dispatches a technician to assess the needs of the animal. Tamia is one of those dogs who needed our help when she developed a skin condition that made her itch and scratch. Our team picked her up every two weeks to check her skin, treat her for fleas and ticks, and give her a medicated bath.
Tamia is now almost healed. Her skin is clear, and her fur has grown back. We will continue to keep an eye on her and all the other street dogs, just in case they need us again.
When you choose to give a monthly donation, you help dogs and cats like Tamia have essential veterinary care to live happy, healthy lives.
Watch the video below to see our team in action, meet Tamia, and witness the concern of the people who care for her in Cotacachi.
