Meet Perrito!

Perrito was one of the many free-roaming dogs living in the large Indigenous village of La Calera in Cotacachi.  Like many of these un-owned street dogs in the village, they spend their days scavenging looking for food morsels and their nights seeking shelter among the rural farmlands.  One rainy evening Perrito was hit by a car and left on the side of the road unable to walk.

Dolores, a local Indigenous woman, was walking home with her two young boys and found the dog laying on the road.  Her two boys started crying and begged their mother to help this poor injured dog.  She carried the dog home and was in a panic on what she should do with this tiny suffering dog.  Dolores reached out to an Amici Volunteer and asked if anyone from the hospital could help.

Perrito was brought into Amici Cannis Hospital and had an exam with x-rays, it was determined the dog would be able to heal from the injuries which included a pelvic fracture.  The woman explained this was not her dog and had no funds to cover the hospital costs.  With help from Community Dog & Sterilization donation programs, Perrito was able to receive the proper medical and surgical care, as well as sterilization and immunizations.

After two months of rehabilitation and medical care while living at the hospital, Perrito returned to the Indigenous village, and found his way into the hearts and home of Dolores and her family.  Perrito is a happy, healthy dog, who spends his afternoons playing with his two best friends, the two boys who found him on the side of the road on that rainy night and begged their mom to save him.
